Burial in a National Cemetery

If your loved one was a veteran who died in active duty or after being discharged for reasons other than dishonorable ones, he or she is entitled to be buried in a VA national cemetery. There are certain exceptions to this rule and requirements you must meet. For a complete list of all eligibility requirements and exceptions, please see the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Spouses and minor children of veterans may also be buried in a national cemetery.

You may not reserve space at a national cemetery ahead of time. Our funeral director or the next of kin of the deceased will make arrangements at the time of need by contacting the national cemetery desired. Please note that Arlington National Cemetery, which is run by the Department of the Army, has requirements that are more restrictive than many other national cemeteries.

Headstones and Markers

The VA can furnish headstones and markers for eligible veterans and service members at no charge. There are many rules and requirements for these markers, the most important being that they must fit the style of existing monuments and markers at the national cemetery. The government will also provide memorial headstones and markers for service members whose remains were not recovered or identified, or those who were buried at sea. For a complete list of all requirements and regulations, please see the US Department of Veterans Affairs.
